The clown birds

Sometimes we can find the most beautiful adventures and experiences in our backyard. Lake Conjola is only a 45-minute drive south of Nowra, and we had no idea of the abundance of birdlife that was around.

The Rainbow Lorikeets indeed take on the persona of the ‘clown’. Their cheeky and unassuming personality quickly put a smile on the face on anyone that watches.

They’re not alone, though. Joined by their merry bunch of feathered friends including ducks (big and small), native pigeons and iconic seagulls.

It’s the lorikeets though that take centre stage on this trip down the south coast.

What starts off as a simple gesture of goodwill by offering a small bite of bread, soon turns into a free for all. A menagerie of birdlife! The birds come from everywhere. Left, right, above and even below, you soon find yourself surrounded. There’s the flapping of the many wings and the constant chirping of the lorikeets as they all dive in for an opportunity to have a little food. Occasionally a ‘quack’ can be heard circling and pacing around the feet.

For those looking for a little laid back break then Lake Conjola is certainly one to add to your bucket list. It’s just one of the many small towns scattered down the south coast of New South Wales.

Travelling around the narrow streets, it’s still possible to see the beach shacks of yesteryear. These small coastal towns that haven’t succumbed to the invasion of corporate high-rise apartments. A town or village where the local bowling club still takes centre stage, and the supermarket is nothing more than a humble general store on the corner of two streets.

Sometimes there is nothing more humbling than sitting outside with a small roast sizzling on the bbq, the cicadas singing in the background and watching those cheeky lorikeets jump and play on the very ropes holding the annexe up!
